Unity of the Redwoods celebrated its twenty-fifth year in 2008. Like many congregations, it began as a small study group that met in members’ homes. As the group grew, it looked for larger quarters, variously coming together in a hotel, several store fronts and even a bowling alley.
Meanwhile, somewhere in Texas, a Unity minister by the name of Polly Quinn felt God was calling her to found a church in Eureka, California. Against the advice of well-meaning friends and family, and despite health challenges, she made the trip west and took the reins of the group, providing the momentum it needed to become organized into Unity of Eureka.
Following her leadership, several others appeared as needed. In 1993, Rev. N. Kelley Bryant was asked to take the helm. She guided the congregation into its present quarters, and suggested that the name be changed to Unity of the Redwoods since the church actually serves all of Humboldt County. She served here for ten years, until health considerations made it necessary for her to resign in 2004.
Upon her resignation, Helen Hampson graciously stepped in and led the group to greater growth and the wonderful family feeling that the church enjoys today. Currently, Nancy Only enjoys the position of administrator and spiritual leader.
We have an average attendance of around sixty, a Sunday School program, a brand new Youth of Unity group, a 14-member choir, and regularly televised Sunday services on local Channel 12. We are also privileged to have three of the original members still active in the congregation
