15th Annual Ghandi –King -Chavez Season for Nonviolence "Global Peace Though Social Mediia" January 30- April 4, 2012
As I write this, it is Sunday, January 15, 2012, the actual birthday of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. This is a fitting time to write an article for the newsletter on the upcoming Season for Nonviolence, a season that honors the lives of the late Rev. King, Mahatma Gandhi, and Cesar Chavez for their leadership in nonviolence through spiritual activism. This year marks the 15th consecutive nation-wide Season for Nonviolence, and Unity of the Redwoods 5th year of participation. The Season for Nonviolence lasts 64 days from January 30th through April 4th. please visit http://www.agnt.org/season-for-nonviolence for more information about the Season for Nonviolence,
Unity of the Redwoods will begin the 2012 SNV with an opening talk on Sunday Jan. 29th titled, "Unity's Path of Enlightened Action" by Linda Evans that will remind us that the very roots of Unity are based on social and spiritual activism. We will again request a Proclamation for the Season for Nonviolence from the Eureka City Council. Linda Evans, Nancy Only and Pat Koutouzos will co-facilitate two discussions on the book club selection, "Civil Disobedience" by Henry David Thoreau, on Sunday, February 5th and again on Sunday, March 4th. Each Sunday during the SNV, we will light a peace candle and will share a Kindness Story. We welcome congregants to share their own kindness stories, either given or received. If you have one you would like to share, please speak with Nancy, Linda or Pat to make arrangements. We continue to offer kindnesses to our community through our Souper Bowl Sunday food drive, gifts to Betty Chin's shower fund, and our very own Kindness Packets that are available for purchase at the Book Nook (a convenient and considerate gift of warm socks, personal cleaning care items and food) to offer to our less fortunate neighbors and citizens. Nancy has arranged for a couple of guest speakers during the SNV offering Sufi and Baha’i perspectives on peace through spirit.
Calling All Unities! Please help plan the closing event for this year's SNV. On Sunday Feb. 5*, at 12:30 p.m. after church service, potluck fellowship time, and just prior to the book club discussion, please join us to become part of the planning committee. Creation of a peace pole, culminating with the "planting" of it in the Unity Community Garden, will take place on Sat. Mar. 31st. We need your help to plan the creation of the pole and to plan an afternoon of peace oriented activities in honor of the SNV. Please bring your ideas to turn this day into acreative expression of peace!
Linda Evans
